I know, I really liked the look too. I had to decide if I wanted to keep it and go with it to see where it went, but in the end I felt sticking to my original idea was worth it. Still, there is a great technique in that step waiting to be used! Extreme paint wear...

Loving the repair panels! I almost want to see something "out of place" for the intended time period of the sub. Modern props, sonar gear, etc... it'd really sell the cobbled racer look.

We are thinking alike...I really want to combine genres together with this one and hope to come out the other side in one piece.  Ian's work really crosses those boundaries in a good way.

It's funny... a few months ago I purchased a bunch of materials and such to make an anti-gravity "boat" which has a very derelict appearance to it. Those, while much different in shape, match the style I want to depict perfectly.

OK, I've opened up a few tubes of oil paints and have begun to add the weathering and patina to the paint. As you can see, I clearly like the 502 Abt. oils from Mig Productions. I've used all brands over the years and find these are truly the best available for what we do, and always with the Odourless Turpentine--the perfect combo. I apply small amounts to a piece of cardboard, which in turn absorbs the linseed oil out of the paint and thus they will dry significantly faster and matte, otherwise it takes days for them dry. The working time is still sufficient for any need as well.

Here is the prepared color palette. And yes, I'll use every color at least once...I actually added two reds after the photo was taken.


I was able to get about a 1/3 of the right side done tonight. They are still a little glossy, but will dry dead matte.


I've also started to imply the frame structure under the skin, sort of like stressed skin on an aircraft. I'll carry the effect throughout, I think it adds a subtle touch of realism to it.

With both the Michaels (Mikes) producing such fantastical results with their subs I find it hard to imagine anyone topping their efforts , not that it is a competition , but they have set the bar very high. I'm looking to Marc Reusser to produce something as good . When he summons up the courage to open the box .

Oh man... that one scratch goes right to the dive plane. That was a race-ender to be sure! Looks good!

Small progress...I've added a waterline and will weather the upper areas slightly differently.

Still quite a ways to go yet, early stages still. I'll also reveal my base idea soon...
