Dammit! Here I thought I was gonna see a simple wooden machine that maybe cost a couple of hundred bucks to build! LOL! How naive of me! That bad boy looks serious! And it spawned a second router? Wow! That machine there is inspirational yet intimidating. But, I really need to stop being lazy and design something within my price range. Or better yet, is your router like a Mogwai or something? Maybe throw some water on it so it can spawn some more CNC routers? LOL!

As for the build, I took a look at the movie trailer. My wife thinks I'm nuts but that movie looks really cool. As for your other builds, simply stunning!

The Tsukuda kits were very nice. I have an ABC Droid that I plan on modifying one day. The details are beautiful but I disliked the pose. The Terminator, on the other hand, was simply standing straight which I actually prefer. I like the paint!

This is an absolutely amazing project to me! I'm not familiar with the movie but I will be! As for the drawing, I've been teaching myself 3D modeling and am practicing on different projects. I'm interested in hearing about your CNC router! Homemade? If so, please share some details! I rely on the local laser cutting services at the moment and would like to own my own router one day to bring my designs to life on my own schedule. Looking forward to more updates!

Recently, I've been digging out old started builds from the last move. Here's one I'm going to continue. First, I need to come up with a good hidden support system being as how Benson's legs are super thin. Then I need to finish up the face. I laser cut this face myself but I recently used Rhino to make a template of the face projected onto a similar sized 3D ball. I'm going to vac-form thin styrene and cut out a contoured face. After that it's really just gluing on the details and painting all them gum balls.

Wow, what an inspirational design, model and above all, build! I've been out of the resin model scene but I now have my eye on this and the Distopic model.

I am in awe with your little sensor! Something so simple adds a story to the scene. I love the concrete walls and tiny detail as well! You, sir, have a new fan! Coming back to this site and seeing the amazing work again has inspired me to continue work on some of my designs and builds. I've been learning Rhino and will probably try to translate some of my drawings into 3D models.

Oh, and the change from the muzzle reducer to the suppressor was a really neat move. The reducer looks tough and appears really well constructed/cast but his sleek and slender build flows much better with the suppressor.

Oh and I didn't get to read the entire thread so if I am repeating something, that's why. Cool stuff and thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much guys! I did coat the crap out of the one rotocast part I made so it is heavier than the original when it was filled with foam. The new pattern should hopefully yield parts only slightly heavier.

So, I have good news. I mentioned earlier that I had to re work the body. I wanted to shed some light on what caused a delay here and how I fixed it.


FIRST:
Here's a shot of my first and only hand rotocast part in white. It really isn't bad only that a small amount of leakage occurred on the right side causing one of the arm recesses to be 1-2 mm deeper than the left side. It's not too noticeable but it wouldn't sit well with me to send parts like that out.



So I had to re-think the body...

I had to ditch the solid top and rotocast idea. I started by removing the top plate and gutting all the foam. As you can see, the wall on the left is full of undercuts so I had to add plastic and make the inner walls smooth and mold ready.

Another area that set me back was the bottom. As you can see in the first pic which was taken earlier in the build, the undercuts....more noticeably is the one on the left side. So, I built new 90 degree walls, again, to make it more mold friendly.








And, another primer shot after re-puttying all the seams.



Oh, and the eye socket will be a separate part now.

Soon, hopefully.

I ran into trouble with my mold. I'm pretty proud of it being, that it is my first time doing a 3-part mold, but I had one minor leak in an area. The leak caused one area to be 1-2mm thicker than the other side. Not too noticeable but it wasn't sitting right with me. I then came into contact with a caster who's turning out to be a cool guy. We've been looking things over to get a better mold. One thing decided was to gut the body and ditch the rotocast. In the process I dipped the body in Castro Purple and stripped all the primer so that I could fill some hollow areas with resin to prepare it for some pressurizing.

I'm currently adding primer and filling in any seams or blemishes and making the master mold friendly. So, all in all, we will be pressurizing the silicone and resin for some better quality parts than what I was hoping to achieve myself.

Sorry for the crappy photos...the lighting in my house and my camera suck!

I got an itch to test out the resin and decided to pour a wheel. I mixed too much but luckily all the molds are pretty much done (just need the arm) so the eye mold was nearby.

I don't know if you can tell but my pour was a success!!!!! The wheel is hollow and solid...all by hand! I even inserted the proper rod so that it can free spin when assembled to the struts. The flash is super thin and all was taken off by hand. Light sanding is all that's needed there!

The eye piece had a bunch of bubbles on the underside. Fortunately, though, all the bubbles gathered at the center where it will be drilled out anyway for lighting!

The tire had some tiny bubbles but honestly, it's worthy enough for the first kit!

I'm so happy. I will play with my camera for some better shots!

Another update...just demolded the main body. All looks good! I also just finished pouring the second half of the wheel.

BTW, the wheel, arms, and wheel struts will be reinforced with rods.

Sorry for the lack of updates....been studying for my next rank exam on the 22nd.

I agree. Actually, the first time my son had me watch it, I thought it was dumb until I heard Mordecai's voice. So funny! Then Benson flips out for no reason! Funny stuff indeed.

I actually went out and bought 9 packs of 3/4" wooden balls for the gumballs. I was going to go small but I figured I needed some thing to match the cartoon. Plus bigger balls...hehe  ....will make it easier to shape the "5 o'clock shadow" that the gumballs sorta form. It's hilarious how the gumballs look huge but are actually small when they fall out of Benson.

More next week after my exam.
