Here's a little something I've been thinking of in regards to the one and only floating city in the sky. Remember that I mentioned that there was other city-states allied with KoH in the north? This is one of them.

This is a one of a kind city created using a large chunk of rock and as many large AG units as could be scavanged after the collapse. In fact most active AG units are in use here. While alliances are maintained with the northern nations they remain neutral. Their alliances are useful as they often float over various northern nations and are somewhat nomadic. Trade is their main source of revenue. They never venture over the desert to the south. Water is gathered from rain or by long teathers that flow down into the sea or rivers.

Tir Nan Og is named after the Irish name for the land of the fairies. It is a beautiful and peaceful place utilizing much of the same technology as KoH. Note the many aeriel vessels floating around and docked with Tir Nan Og.

Anyway, this was one of my first ideas for this Minimal G project and one that I will be creating a scale model of. Should be a blast making a small city on a floating rock! Cool

This is really neat.  I happen to have small AG module I bought from garage sale last year (they have no idea what it was), I can send it to you so your scale model will really float mid-air.

Heh, this is really Laputa-ish.  Loving it!

I've never seen Laputa, but really need to now.  LOL

What do you mean by AG module? Since when does this exist? :?

Haha it was a joke (lame one)  LOL  I remember someone did try to design a base with magnet such that the plane would float above it, not sure what happened to that.

You really really really need to see Laputa, I'm sure it'll spark your imagination even more.  Besides, it's one of the best anime of all times.

I feel bad for the residents of Tir Nan Og. The fate of floating cities is never pleasant. There's either the constant desire to get into it ("Battle Angel Alita"), a vicious change in management ("Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back"), or they end up crashed in a heap in the middle of nowhere (that one episode of "Trigun").

Seriously, though, looks like a great concept. And a nice sketch, too! It'll be interesting to see how this near-utopian nation goes from the drawing board to the display stand.

How about if the city is built on top of the wreckage of a starship? Something along the lines of a Star Destroyer or maybe bigger? I just think it would be a great contrast to have this city with these huge elegant spires and wreckage poking out here and there. Kind of like a reminder of what happened 100 years ago. Maybe that's where these AG units are housed? Buried under the rock, in the belly of that ship. Just an idea...

Zero: This one will probably eventually fare no better. Now I need to think of a worse fate! Maybe overloading of the AG units sending the inhabitants to a certain death in the freezing vacuum of space? Falling in a volcano? A "lemming" virus?

fred: nah... I like the rock with AG pods and tubes and wires and etc jutting from it as if it was cobbled together. Should be a good look when done and I won't need to scratch space ships.

the technology defined....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk

it's one of my favorite anime of all...the guymelef's (mechs) that they use are amazingly designed...

You've got all sorts of options for the untimely end of Tir Nan Og (whenever that may be). One of the best "science-fact" option would probably have to do with the increased radiation exposure to the city and its inhabitants. Although details have yet to be unveiled about the star that Trocken orbits, it can be assumed that--as it orbits its star closer than the Earth orbits the sun--Trocken is probably subject to greater radiation than Earth. And although the altitude of Tir Nan Og has not yet been revealed (though, I'd wager it may have a mild variance), it can be assumed that the city and its people are probably subject to greater radiation than people who inhabit the actual planet below. This would be similar to the way in which people living in Denver--or taking an airline flight--are subject to greater radiation from the sun than people living closer to sea-level. There's simply not as much atmosphere between solar radiation and them.

That being said, radiation opens up all sorts of options for untimely demise: increased cancer rates (assuming there's no cure), sterility of the population, unexpected A-G failures related to prolonged radiation exposure, or unexpected breakdown of the actual "ground" material of Tir Nan Og due to its increased and prolonged radiation exposure.

Isn't it great? You haven't even built it yet, and we're already coming up with viable options for its destruction.

I'd say put it at the base of the only remaining orbital elevator / skyhook - that would definately lead to some .. fun methods of destruction.

My vote goes for "meteor hit"--they'd be the biggest bad luck city in the universe then. Either that, or pull a "Titanic" and have them run into an iceberg on the city's maiden voyage over open waters.

Tir Nan Og could be used as a weapon in a last-ditch effort.

Well... skyhooks would had been destroyed first during the collapse I believe when infrastructure was targeted. Aside from that, the city is almost constantly on the move except when it stops at a major city for trade and the inevitable party. I see Tir Nan Og being a "festival city" in that it's arrival is normally met with celebration and what not.

As for it blowing it self up, that's a problematic way to go. Since they're neutral they probably wouldn't destroy themselves to save another city state. Plus that "let's all be martyrs" attitude in anime and real life never sat well with me. Let's all die rather than save ourselves.

Meteor sounds rather unlucky and a humorous way to go.

I still like the lemmings idea. Tongue

Falls are the number one cause of death in Tir Nan Og.
