Hi folks,

This is Games Workshop's "Ork Bommer" kit. The Orks are large green space hooligans who speak in a sort of Nigel Molesworth patois. I like the Scrapheap Challenge designs of their equipment and vehicles and this particular one was irresistable. I've added the undercarriage myself since the vanilla kit came with a rather weedy belly skid and I thought some wheels would add to the early MiG vibe.

For those not au fait with the GW 40K universe, this is in the blue/white/red colours of the "Death Skulls" Ork clan, who are prone to nicking bits off other Orks. That's where the yellow aileron and some other bits come from. It's also a nice way to add a bit of colour.

"Oi! We din't steal dem, we *borrowed* dem. Dey woz hardly using dem bitz at all!"

Part of the fun of doing this kind of thing is getting to paint some minis - I'm no expert but I like to have a play from time to time:

And of course because it's silly sci-fi madness you can have things like "da tailpipe"

...which definitely has something in common with the MiG or Ouragan Cold War jet design, and "da uvver tailpipe"...

...which doesn't. I'm so sorry Oops

"Hurr hurr hurr. It iz aktually ded prakticul becoz wen you iz up dere in da sky and you haz to go, den you haz to go somewhere!"

This was supposed to be a quickie project but it ended up taking quite a while. I think it's the style of painting I opted to try, which was all sponges and brushes after the aerosol primer. Lots of fun to do though, so I'm glad I spent the time on it. I was interested to see if this rather rough and ready approach would give a result that would be believable on a scale model. I'm thinking particularly of the Remora when the third edition is released. On balance, with the Dullcote over it, I think it might, which is good news for me because it's the kind of painting you can do in front of the TV rather than outside. You do get quite a heavily-textured finish from the sponged acrylic but for corroded metal that's not so bad.

Cheers, and thanks for looking!

Will

Thanks folks, I really enjoyed this one. Took much longer than I thought it would but I enjoyed all of it, sometimes it's nice to just paint something simple as opposed to build something really complicated. Now back to Yamato?!?

Really liked following the WiP for this, and the finished kit is pretty damn cool. The sponged painting technique you applied to most of the thing really shines and gives it the dirty grimy look it deserves!

As I wrote in WIP section - great work.

Funny, because my friend (old 40K enthusiast) sent me this link today:

Thanks!

That's an impressive job on your friend's one, it's interesting how a different approach changes the feel of it - it looks really sharp, almost like line art, which shows off the detail that my grungy version hides. The sooty thruster bells on the wings are excellent, as are the bombs. I'm not sure I like the rust streaks from the rivets but I can see that they fit the overall style.

The kit does seem to have caught peoples' imagination, there are heaps of them on CMON and Flickr.
