The Crow 1/6 Resin
«

Okay, so the story behind this is my friend who runs an independent comic books store had a guy trade in a load of statues and this random Crow resin model in a box, interestingly it was in a Screamin' Jason Vorhees vinyl model box, so I'm guesiing the guy collected models at some point.
This isn't my usual model, I dont do figures, but as a favour I agreed to build it up and paint it so he can see if he can get anything for it, or just have it as decoration in his cabinet at the shop. I figured what the hell, I'm in the middle of another build but it sounded like a fun little (hopefully quick!) project.
This was the box it cam in
The Crow 1/6 Resin
And this is the model
The Crow 1/6 Resin
After doing some research this looks like a recast of sculpt done in 1995 by a guy called Jay Dee, the only image I could find of it on the net.
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The reason I say its a recast is because the quality isn't that great, the shotgun is missing the end of the barrel beyond the pump grip, it doesn't look like its been broken off, more like a cast problem, although to be honest its not as bad as it could be.
The crow that sits on his shoulder is going to be the most work, it looks awful, the wire supports for the wings are sticking out, its ridiculously thin like its been run over, and the head/beak is a total mess, so this will be getting the aves treatment!
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
To start with I soaked it all in warm soapy water, then a rubbing alcohol rub, then rinsed off left to dry, and then glued the crow together. Got the limbs and head in place with super glue then dripped in some 5 minute epoxy for strength.
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Just held it on the base to give an impression of size.
The Crow 1/6 Resin
After getting it together, I have to say, I'm really looking forward to painting this, I'm even looking forward to getting the crow in order!
Once all thats dry I'll start filling all the gaps, of which there are many!
More on this soon thanks for looking!

You should do something silly with the crow.
Yes, that is what you should do.
Like, give it a cyborg eye or something.
Wait, is this a technical commission? Maybe "artistic licence" won't be appreciated, then...

Yeah Pixie if it was mine I would definitely fool around with it, but my friends going to want to maybe try and sell it (so no pressure on me to do a good job then!

Had a chance to sort out the crow today.
Started by clipping the excess wire off of the ends of the wings
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Then using some aves I beefed up the ridiculously thin body and head, dipped a scribing tool in some water (so it doesn't stick) to carve in the same ragged feather pattern as the resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Then flattened out some aves to cover where the support wire shows through on the tops of the wings, using the same tool to for the pattern and to blend it in
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Then I realised that although in the picture it shows the crow on Eric's shoulder, there arent any feet for it, I'm going to use wire for the legs which will be located in two holes I'll drill in his shoulder
But it would look pretty crap to just have the legs sticking out of two holes in the crows body as is, so I've made him some thighs, and also covered over where the wires show throgh on the underside of the wing.

I'm really pleased with how this went, once its dry it can be primed, and painted, hopefully very soon! Thanks for looking

That's very impressive work on the birdie, it sits well with what's already there and it looks a lot more solid now. Adding the legs was very worthwhile.
There were two things in the built-up pic that looked wrong - the legs (fixed) and the beak. I think it's much too long, and it makes the crow look more like a seagull :) Worth trimming a bit off?

Thanks Will, I must admit I do enjoy working with aves, and as soon as I saw how bad the crow was part of me did inwardly smile!
And your totally right about the beak, I did look at some photos to get a sense of shape and where to position the thighs, but totally didn't notice that beak, its way too long will definitely be trimming that down

Okay! Crow beak is sorted!
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Much more crow like!
Also filled some gaps with aves, still have the odd mold seam to file down, and there are a few pinholes as well, but I had the aves out so got that task out of the way.

Thanks John!
Okay so more clean up on the figure today, started by dealing with this monstrosity of flash
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Rather than bugger about with my saw and scalpel trying to carefully remove it I just snapped the whole section of jacket out with my sprue cutters and rebuild that section with aves
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
A button got snapped off so I just made one in aves and stuck it in position
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The boots looked really strange to me then I realised the crappy pieces of faux leather were supposed to be stuck on for the tongues. Well thats not going to happen as they look like total crap.
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
So again its out with the aves to make some boot tongues
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
I'm really happy with the progress so far on this build, its big break from my usual model building but I'm enjoying it immensely.
Next step will be priming the figure.
More soon guys. thanks for looking

The Crow 1/6 Resin
And sprayed it black
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
This is just the base coat, next will come dry brushing with a dark grey, using future to gloss up the beak and eyes etc
More soon thanks for looking

Oh man!! Excuse me while I dig up and ressurect this topic! So much for more soon eh??
Okay so with the turbine racer, christmas and everything out of the way its time to start back on the crow.
I've been really busy this month sourcing some materials for an upcoming 1/100 gundam diorama i'll be doing after this, but with it all sorted and planned I want to complete this one.
I started by just using a satin black rattle can to paint the crow black all over, obviously later in the build I will use pigments, washes etc to get some variance in black between the coat/trousers/boots/vest but for now its black black black!
The Crow 1/6 Resin
I left the shotgun as that still needs a barrel and some minor cleanup, I bought some styrene tube that matches the barrel size so that will be glued on after I strengthen it by drilling a hole and pinning it with a bit of brass rod
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Then I got the first coat of white on the face, this is just the first coat so its not that great and a little messy around the edges but that will be touched up and sorted out later.
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Basically the way I'm approaching this is I shall use flat enamel white on the flesh coloured parts as an undercoat, there are only the neck fingers and a few spots on the leg/chest that need flesh. I'm no figure painter so the way I'm doing this is probably unorthadox, but I just want to keep this build stress free fun, and (fingers crossed) quick!
More soon, and this time its true, promise! haha

Okay update time!
Got another coat of white onto the face, think I'm going to leave it at that, depending on how it looks when dry, but its looking pretty damn white.
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Also got the shotgun barrel on, and sanded down the knuckles of his hand that grips it as they were a bit out of alignment where I guess the mould slipped.
The Crow 1/6 Resin
And after a tidy up with some 320 grit I sprayed it with some primer.
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Next up I'll mask off the hands so I can spray the guns with some alclad black gloss primer then the alclad steel colour mixed with a little gunmetal. That will be the only airbrushing I'll do, all details etc will be done with a brush with a mixture of enamels, acrylics and mig pigments.
More soon thanks for looking

Right so I masked off the hands with kitchen paper and little tape, and sprayed the black primer then my alclad steel/gunmetal mix as a base for the pistol and shotgun.
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Then now I'm happy with the white for the face and where his clothes are ripped exposing skin, I painted my flesh colour base, I also painted the eyes an off white in readiness for the fiddly job of doing the pupils
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Then I layed down some more white paint on the hands as an undercoat for my flesh as with the face
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Next up I'll lay down more white for the hands before starting on the guns and I'll make a start cleaning up the hair around the face and adding the black face design.
I've got a bit of momentum going with this now which I intend to keep up so more soon guys

Thanks Shark! To be entirely honest i'm not a fan of it either, that's partly why I'm making quick progress, i want to get it done so i can move on to more interesting projects.
But don't get me wrong i am enjoying this build a lot I'm not a total masochist!

Just a small update, got another coat of white onto the hands and put the first coat of flesh on them, and also put a second coat of flesh on the neck.
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Its all a bit messy but I'm just getting the basic colours down before tidying it all up and doing some detail work with pigments etc, only basic colours left to get down is the dark grey of the leg and chest bandages, I still need to put some colour on the guns for the handles/stock etc but I'll do that one the hands are done as a way of tidying up flesh overspills
More soon thanks for looking

Just another quick one, managed to nip out on my lunch break and do a bit more painting.
I painted the brown of the shotgun and neatened up the paintjob of the hand holding it, also tidied the paint around the rips on the neck and trousers and got the dark grey of the chest and leg bandages done, although I still need to darken the leg bandage a little.
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Next I'll give the shotgun a second coat of brown and paint the bit where the shells go in silver, as well as tidying the other hand. Then I'll start the face
More soon

Update!
Just a small one, another quick lunchbreak session!
I got another coat of brown on the shotgun, and painted the silver bit on the stock, also started the detail on the face, cant quite see in this photo but I screwed up the iris of the left eye so had to repaint it the off white in readiness of tidying it and re doing it.
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Once i've done the left eye I can start shading detailing and washing, then it will be on to the base, and oh man that needs some work!
More soon thanks for looking

Okay, started the shading on the face and flesh now that I have all the basic colours down. Used mig pigments, light rust and old rust for the flesh, and light dust with some black smoke for the face.
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
The Crow 1/6 Resin
Next up I'll put some darker shading on the hands, highlight the eyes before giving them a drop of future to give them more life and I'll add some washes to the coat and trousers to give some variance in the blacks.
More soon thanks for looking
