 Smiley

HI folks!
This is my first  thread on FF Forum!
I’d like  to show  you the WIP of my last project, which I made for the  NKGC Contest at Lucca Comics and Games in Lucca (Italy).
This project is a “personal tribute” to the awesome Daniel Simon’s work “Cosmic Motors” and the “star” is the “Detonator” bike. LOL

I want to briefly talk about  these  15 months of hard work  ….objectively  as possible……(I hope….)

In my  “ interpretation” of  the bike,  I   imagined a racing style look, like an Endurance racing car (Le Mans 24 hours, 24 hours of Daytona etc.)
The guide line of the all project is a balance of different styles, vintage ’50-‘60/futuristic….starting from the legendary Ford GT40’s Gulf orange/light blue  coloration…..
The first step was to draw the pictures from the Cosmic Motors to scale and put them onto the CAD...

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Another choice I made was  to build everything without CAD-CAM  or CNC  help.. handmade only!
I chose transparent plexiglass (methacrylate) for the bike’s core for its consistence and  stability.
I made the body, the tyres and other parts with lots of sections of 10 mm thick  plex, glued as a sandwich, cut with a  mini ratchet drill....

All parts were  joined and sanded first with a bench grinder , then with superfine hand sandpapers to get the right  sizes.

To make it I used a mix of different materials, such as  PVC pipes, plex, wood, alluminium, etc., all joined with Milliput.

The side engine covers,To get two perfect symmetrical parts, I turned a single wood shape then I cut it into two elements.

Hello Stafano.

Well, once again, I am officially blown away by the talent represented on this site!
What a brilliant build and great to see the progress from the ground up. I have never thought to use plexiglass as a building product like that and you have opened a new world of possibilities for me. I'm waiting for my new lathe to be delivered so looking at your pictures certainly inspired me to get stuck into using plexiglass. Are there any tips or secrets for cutting it nicely on the lathe? I turn urethane and Delrin so I usually have the speed around 500rpm and approach the material with a very shallow face of the blade, almost like planing it off instead of cutting steel with the very tip.
Anyway, I just wanted to drop you a line to say great work and what an excellent build so far!
If you ever consider making some molds so you can cast some of these, I'm interested........... Please.....................
Oh yeah, nice details too. I especially liked the exhaust pipe detail. Perfect.

Scott.

I just went to the Cosmic Motors Promo on You-Tube. Great stuff isn't it!
For anyone that's interested, check this out  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1INE6t6sLA

This clip inspired me too, though not Cosmic Motors.

Love the concept, love the CAD, love your work Stafano.
Keep it up and I look forward to your next post!

This guys is the best scratchbuilder in the world!
Stefano is AWESOME. I've seen his Detonator in Lucca and guys, it's just PERFECT.
No kind of mistakes, it seems just a 3D model.
Outstanding work once again!

Me too appreciate this model in Lucca.

Outstanding!
This model alone justify the trip trough Comics&Games event dense crowd up to the modelling contest showcases
(this means find your way, surrounded by excited cosplayers from a side to the opposite side of Lucca downtown)

It's huge, there isn't even a flat surface, it isn't CNC milled but totally hand made.. and you don't ever see the girl!  Wink

Congratulations again, Stefano! Smiley
C'mon! Complete the pilot (another girl Wink) and delight us with your next model! LOL

Thanks Stefano.
That Zero paint and alclad looks impressive. I'm waiting on some Alclad in the mail so I'm really looking forward to giving it a go to see if it's better than my usuall Humbrol Metalizer.
The build is really clear and crisp! Nice joints and straight lines. I'm sure Daniel Simon would be interested in this one!
Those tyres have come up a treat. Thanks very much for posting the wip and for allowing us to follow your amazing progress.

Excellent work on the paint, it looks stellar, very clean! I really like how this design is coming together.

To be honest, I would've probably gone with different colours myself, but that's always so very subjective!
