Decals Questions (Ask them here!)

I have trouble to put decals on the kit.

Now hold onto and submerge the decal into warm water until it loosens from the backing

What happen to me is that the decals never loosens from the backing (not peel off). Usually, how long the decals have to be into the warm water before it start to loosen? I put the decals into warm water until the warm water gets cool. However, the decals still stick with the transparent plastic sheet (backing). What should I do, is there anything I did wrong?

Uh, are you sure you are using "water slide" decals and not dry transfer decals?

Where did you get these decals, and for what kit?

I think it is water slide decals, but not sure.

Those are dry transfers. They are meant to be rubbed on.

As a guide, water slide decals always have paper backings. In any case, even for water slide, you shouldn't wait till the decal falls off the paper, it would be too hard to handle and the adhensive would be lost from dipping in water too long.

10-15 sec of soaking water slide decals are usually enough to loosen it, then slide it off the backing onto the model.

Smething more funny is that, I put the "Dry Transfers" (which I thought it is water slide) on the kit and I put a hot moist cloth on top. And the dry transfers stick on the kit. However, it melted the future coat.

Ok this question may sound stupid to most of you but I woulld like to purchase some decals besides whats in the models. So I was wondering if any of you guys could tell me a good place to get them from?I did some research and I have found them on models4u
and hlj, but one says they will take 2-3 weeks and the other is in japan and that will take just as long.
Any where in the USA I can go to ?

Hi there,

I'm currently working on the Macross Zero SV-51 and doing waterslide decals for the first time.

I need to ask if its okie to use Mr Mark Softener after the decal has dried?

This is because I see aircavities in the decal after it has dried

I use softener all the time afterwards for that problem. Lightly score the surface of the decal with a fresh blade which will allow the solution to go under the decal and do it's thing.

From my Hazel [Stutzer] thread... thought it'd be useful here:

So I was decaling this kit today and had an interesting and what I thought horrible problem. I did all my decaling the same way I normally do and they went on very nicely over my glossy Future coat. However when I went to apply my flat coat of Future afterwards, most of the decals ended up with a darker "halo" around the outter edge. The only thing I did differently than normal was thin the Flat FFA with Tamiya Thinner.

So basically I screwed up several main parts that I finished... until...

I figured it might be the setting solution reacting with the thinner since I didn't let the decals set as long as normal before flat-coating the kit. Sometimes the solution leaves an irradescent film that can be removed with more solution on a paper towel. I tried rubbing the one decal with some paper-towel moistened with setting solution. Well... it darkened it worse than before.

So next I decided to try (on a whim) giving the part another coat of gloss FFA then another coat of flat. The gloss coat for whatever reason evened out the tone and when reflattened with the exact same FFA mix as before it came out perfect like it should of.

WHEW! :o

So the lesson learned? In the future I'll coat the decals with a thin coat of gloss BEFORE flat coating them if using Tamiya Thinner. :wink:

I was wondering if any one had any warning decal sheets they would be willing to sell? Maybe someone out there knows somewhere else (that they have dealt with in the past) that I can get some from besides models4you because they are closed for awhile.
