Creating Slots in Plastic

Hi guys, do you mind if I run something by everyone?
One of my many projects lined up is to re-visit and re-vamp my PG Gundam, which I painted in Prototype Gundam colors. I want to go back and fully create the Prototype Gundam, but that means a few important mods.
What I want to run by everyone is this - for the angle guards, where the Prototype has those three or four slots - I was planning on measuring out the slots, drawing in with pencil, then drilling many little holes until I can basically break the plastic out and sand the edges.
Does that sound like it would work or am I'm walking into a mess? Does anyone have any better suggestions for this?
As for the forearms, I was planning on using Styrene to create that "raised edges" look.

Okay, thanks Man! I thought it sounded like a solid idea, but I know I'll need a new set of files or create some of FF's sanding boards before I try it.

Try using a flat thin needle file to sand the inside of the slots - you will get a better finish than using sanding sticks.
