Patrol in the Debris Field

I'm taking a little break from the Dune Hopper to regain my mental health. So I started a pair of Fireball SGs a few weeks ago. Here's the details and lots of pics. I'm already up to the painting and detailing stages.

Very very cool! I love the Fireballs, and the debris made me go back and look a few times. The damage and rivets are very nicely done.
Like how the battery is placed inside the body. I guess the added weight really makes the arm joint a critical part of the design.
Good to see you back in action!

Thanks Major. The battery isn't too heavy, but having filled the limbs with resin to make for easier pinning and whatnot they've got a little weight. I recall how much of a pain the 2 figures on my Fliege dio were to keep in place and how wobbly they were during transport. These are removable, thank goodness, and skick on there pretty good.
I haven't really been out of action... just not posting much for some reason. Needed a short vacation from people in all forms!

This looks really cool. I like the rivets on the piece of the ship.
The two suits really seem to be in suspension in space, very nice effect!

I love watching you come up with these really creative dioramas. Oh, and of course I can really appreciate the modeling skillz involved in adapting and scratchbuilding the vehicles as well!

Thanks guys!
Here's the large debris chunk and a description/step-by-step of the "hairspray technique".

Foo YOU ARE AWESOME !
Just the idea of this Simple Diorama is Mind tickling .. I am not sure why but divers always seemed to represent depth to me , Maybe cuz they go to the deepest parts of sea's / Oceans..
Anyway , So far so good .
The Hair spray technique is working perfectly to achieve the rust old looks ..
Although Foo , I'd suggests you hand paint a little red on the sides , And maybe around the bolts over the ships metal plate.
It's more of
70% red
+
30% Brown
(light brown)
to get the rusty color
Patrol in the Debris Field
Never mind the guy on the right >;D
Also it seems that rust forms as dripping from higher to lower parts (No idea why
)
Also , I am not sure but maybe the Divers suits well also have some minimal rust ? (in life like conditions
)
But seriously it's freaking nice to see you back to modeling , I've been waiting so long after the commissions lol.
Best of Luck , And Keep Rockin Teh World

Nixosan... thanks for the refs, but this is a space diorama, not an undersea one.
Rust will be kept to an absolute minimum as well as streaks due to the lack of gravity involved. Love that image though... nice and rusty!

not to mention, that rust requires oxygen to form, so you will not see rust in space.

Exactly. So no rust would form on the exterior. Now the interior... that might have some rust here and there since that would contain oxygen and some humidity as well. But again, an absolute minimal amount.

Oh !
* Writes i am stupid thausand times over the blackboard *
It's
"Space"
, Not
" Ocean Depths"
..
I had a completely different idea about this lol.
Well Space is fine .. It's actually cooler than Deep oceans
Well if as you said foo it's space then FREAKIN HELL NO . Don't put any kind of rust .. Maybe some heat damage ya know from the fraction ..
(again it's just brown around the bolts probably)
Now , Aren't you supposed to be posting updates about this W.I.P ?
Don't tell me you haven't been doing some progress , Cuz that'll break me ..
Best Of Luck

The hair spray technique is amazing!
The sort of weathering you achieved is so realistic and I can't wait to see the final product.

Oh snap, I feel like I've been out MaK'ed.
I love it. I've always wanted to do a larger scene space dio. This is looking fantastic and the wreckage is just great.
I'm glad you are introducing the hairspray to a new audience. I've yet to try it, but it looks very effective.

Thanks mac!
Thanks BK! Out-Mak'd... doubt it!
The funny thing is that the shape of this one is primarily based on my Detolf cases from Ikea! I like doing some larger pieces, but lately they've been taking up too much shelf space. So with this one I decided to go UP in order to make the best of my shelves. I measured the height of the shelf then based the size of the debris on that. I was also just going to do the one FB SG as well, but again, since there was enough space I opted to use both of the ones I had.
I wasn't going to try the hairspray initially and just bought my first can on Friday. I had concerns since it's not something I ever considered using. But seeing all the great results that railroaders and military modelers have been having I had to give it a try. Now however I'm torn... the chips are so realistic since they really are chips... but I wonder if I could use this technique on a whole model for just the standard amount of light chipping. It would make the process easier and more realistic for sure, but the downsides would be trying to not overdo it and my concerns about the weathering. Since I haven't applied any solvents (turpenoid usually) yet for my filters, washes, and fading I'm not sure how well it'll hold up. I'd hate to be applying a wash and suddenly start lifting my main color away from my dark gray undercoat. Guess this will be good experimentation. I've given the post-chipped paint 3 coats of FFA (2 gloss and one satin) so that should hold up, but you never know till you get in there and try.

Couldn't you just apply the hairspray to the areas where you want chips, instead of applying it to the entire model?
