I finally got my shipment from HLJ.  These kits are nicer than I thought they'd be.  Can't wait to get started, although it'll probably be awhile till i'll be able to.  I have to finish a couple other things first.

In the meantime, i've made a color-up of the basic look of it.  This is a scheme that was used very late in WWII by the Germans.  Within the last few weeks of the war.  Known as the "Octopus" scheme.  I've always thought it was cool, but haven't built any models that it could fit on, so now I will.

Looks cool. So how are you gonna do the circles? Rubber stamp? Hand paint? Airbrush? :?

I haven't decided yet, but I was thinking of a stamp, although, i'd probably carve it out of wood, or plastic since I have easier access to that stuff.  Hand painting might be an option as well.. I usually just figure things out as I go though, so time will tell.

I saw a rewiew using his scheme on a 1/35 tank (tamiya model mag), the modeler cut a circle from a piece of tape, and used the hole as the outline mask. He then cut a slightly smaller circle, and used the solid circle inside the larger hole, given an "o". then he joined teh 2 circles together with a strip of tape to give the desired marking. This obviously gives identical markings, although I guess you may want a more "hand painted approach".

Well, better late than never I guess... I've finally finished the commission I was working on and have started looking over the model.  I plan to start actual work on it tomorrow  night, so we'll see if I can make it in time.. heh, heh.

Man.. i've been assembling this thing... Seam City!  I haven't dealt with this many seams in years.  This is not going to be fun, I hate sanding more than any other aspect of modeling.

Well, I don't see myself finishing this before the deadline.. it's just been a busy year for me and I got started too late.  *shrug* oh well, i'll still finish it, maybe a week later.

Anyways, i've done a lot of seam sanding on the arms and legs.. and that's not really worth a photo.. man do I hate sanding..

So I got to the part where you test fit the figure in the main part, so I decided to go ahead and paint him up.  It's done with Vallejo Acrylics.  It sucks, in the photo you can't see the shading on the face.. i need to take better pics, but here you go for now.

I think that looks great. Clean, but with depth. For whatever reason, the last image is reminding me of vintage art deco-style Superman art. Cool

BHop,

How did you like painting the figure with the Vallejo Acrylics? How does it compare with other mediums you may have painted faces with? I bought the colors according to Ortiz's approach, but have been hesitant to start for fear of mucking it all up. You did a very good job on such a poor figure. Actually, the one that comes with the H1 is one of the better busts. The black may need a Matt coat, as it has that Vallejo sheen to it.

Thanks,

Yeah, i like the Vallejos.  I have used oils, enamels, Citadel acrylics.. I like Vallejo the best.  Mostly because they dry fast and thin with plain water.  Oil is great for figures, but the long drying time turns me off.  With the acrylics, I can finish a whole figure in one night if I put my mind to it.  I still have to spray him with a clear coat.  I had just finished painting him a few minutes before I took the pics and I like to let it sit overnight before clear coating.

I also used acrylics on my other military figures found on my site.(except for the tank commander that was sold on ebay, it's oils)  The samurai took first at Tamiyacon last year too Big Grin

A link that might help you with painting figures with acrylics is Jaume Ortiz's site.  He is the man.  Amazing.. and he's got a tutorial on his site.  Check it out.  I can assure you that you won't be disappointed.

yep, that's the article I have. There is also an amazing step by step by Mario Fuentes "Painting Figures with Model Color" that I found at Planet Figure I believe. More in depth and more techniques outlined and expained Very good article. And coloradominiatures.com has a nice page with recommended paints from different Historical Figure magazines. A few of Jaume's mixes are in there.

I can't wait to see the finished model. CM also carries the Yoshi sculpted 1/20 heads. High quality sculpts and casts.

Almost ready to start painting.  I have to add the elbow covers with some putty, finish the back and the panzerfaust (or whatever you'd call it in the MAK world).

Cheer up, Sleepy Jean.
Oh, what can it mean.
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen.

The pilot looks a little... distracted.  LOL

Nice texture. With the bad molding, these kits almost require it to "hide" some stuff.

Update.. i painted the camo.  It came out pretty cool.  For some reason, my matte coat is shiny..     I think I put too much at once on..

Looks great. The octo-camo turned out very nice.  Cool I had the same problem with canned clear-coats which is why I switched to flat Future.  Sad

Very nice paintjob! The rust/corrosion effect is very realistic!
The welding on the suit is a part of the cast or did you add it?

Looks great. The camo turned out fantastic, the corrosion effect is cool, and the weathering looks great as well. Looking forward to seeing it on a base! Cool
