1  Models / Model Gallery / Astray Red Frame on: January 07, 2007, 05:44:44 PM
Very nice. I was thinking about doing an Astray either red or blue frame. Do you like it? Would you recommend it? Btw, what kind/brand of decals did you use on this one? Are they waterslides or dry transfers? I've found that really small decals with lettering tend to be an enormous pain in the ass if they are dry transfers. And that the clear sticker type don't age very well. I haven't tried waterslides yet so I just wondered if that's what you used here as it looks very clean and realistic.

I tried to but it didn't reach my reserve price. I might end up listing it again but I think I'm gonna do some more work on it first.

Here's my recently completed 1/100 Saviour. This is only my second attempt at a LED mod on the eyes so don't be to harsh on me.

I realise that the last picture doesn't have the decals on it yet but it was complete besides that and I haven't actually taken any other pics with the eyes lit up. To see all the photos I took visit my website at http://www.hyp3r.net.

Very very nice orange. I hope that I'll eventually get as good at modding/painting as you are. This kind of reminds me of the Impulse Zaku design from Seed Destiny but I don't think anyone has made one of those yet. Keep up the good work!

Saviour is done with the exception of some decals that I've got coming in the mail. International shipping takes forever, especially around Christmas, so I decided to take a gallery of photos now and I'll take another after I get the decals.

I was able to do everything I planned to do with it except for a few things. First, I couldn't find a reasonably priced "Minerva" decal, so I gave up on that. Second, I was thinking of putting blue LEDs in the thrusters on the railguns, but I decided that was more trouble than it was worth. It would be impossible to run wires from the thrusters to the power source I used for the eyes. So, if I did put LEDs there, I'd have to have separate batteries for each one hidden in each railgun. Since this would make it much more complicated and would weigh down the railguns, I figured the cons outweighed the pros in this case.

All things considered, I am very satisfied with how it turned out. This is one of, if not the best model I've done so far. To see all the photos check out my website.

I think the "sand only" looks good but I agree that a well painted model does look somewhat better. I'm getting a new airbrush set for Christmas so my next model will be painted.

I didn't get these metal tubes from mechaskunk but I suggest you get them there ^^

The clear part of the eyes was a pain and probably could have been done a better way now that I look back on it. What I did was carve off the top part of the faceplace, the part that would be painted black and has the eyes on it. I then took the eyes of a 1/100 Shen Long out of my graveyard (I don't like Shen Long so I scrapped it a while back). I made sure that they fit together properly and then I glued them in place.

For the weights in the feet I used some lead weights that I found at the hobby store in town the other day. I can't remember what brand they are but they come in a package of 16 pieces each 1/4 oz. They are about 1cm x 3/4cm x 1/4cm in size. Since they are lead, you can use a mallet/hammer/pliers/whatever to shape it to fit where you need it. Before I found these I was using small nails and screws and some hobby filler, which worked about as good but was messier and took up more space.

Here are some pictures of my MG Strike Gundam. I painted the little details that needed it, but the majority of the kit was finished with the "sand only" technique. I used the dry transfer decals and clear decals that came with the kit. I didn't apply all of them, though because I think it would look a little too busy and therefore less realistic with too many decals. This is also my third venture into the world of metallic tube beads and my first involving them with a MG kit. I really like the way it makes it look. I think it really brings it to life. Also, I hand painted the Kira figure that came with the kit. It's in some of the pictures if you look closely.

Very nice. This is Yukikaze right? I think you did a really good job painting it. This makes me want to build one too. I've only built one plane, a 1/72 VF-1D which was kind of disappointing. About how big is this kit?

Been awhile since I took any progress shots of my Saviour so I thought I'd share a photo or two. Obviously it's not completely done but almost. I've still got to finish up some of the yellow parts. Also, I plan to put 2mm brass pipes in the ends of the railguns and apply the dry transfer and waterslide decals. I've already hollowed out the feet and filled them with lead weights. Notice that he isn't leaning backward even with his railguns straight back.

http://www.hyp3r.net/images/factory/saviour5.jpg

I have the LED mod all wired up. I have to say that it was a much bigger pain in the ass than I had originally anticipated. I wouldn't recommend doing this to Saviour unless you really know what you're doing and plan things out in advance. I think mine turned out pretty well though. I have the wires running through the torso and through the center of the peg it pivots on all the way down to the place between his legs where the hole for a stand is. I insterted a connector there so that you can attach/detach the power suppy for the LED.

I'm just about done. My next update should be with him completely finished.

I'm about 50% done with Saviour so I thought I'd give a quick update on the status. His right leg, right arm/shoulder and lower torso are completely done. As you can see I've even added the metal tubes already.

http://www.hyp3r.net/images/factory/saviour3.jpg

What's not done is the left arm, and the rail guns need to be glued, inked, and sanded. The left leg is about 90% complete. I just need to wait for the glue to dry so that I can sand away the seam lines. The same goes for the upper torso. I'm going to wait until last to glue the head together because I need it apart for the LED.

I'm still not sure where to go with the LED thing. It needs one but I'm not sure if I want to put one in the thrusters on the rail guns or in the eyes or both. I think I can overcome the issue of the non-clear part they included for the eyes by using a part from my "graveyard." We'll see. I'll keep you updated.

I got my Saviour in the mail finally. I'm really impressed with the kit. There's more detail than I expected it to have also. For instance, the gun has more parts than the MG Strike gun. I am kind of disappointed though that they didn't include a clear piece for the eyes. Especially when they included a clear piece for the blue thing on the head. It makes it a lot harder to put an LED mod in the eyes.

Here's a quick rundown of my plans for this model:

"Sand only" technique for the finish.
Custom waterslide caution/warning decals. I'd also like to have a decal that says "Minerva" for one of the shoulders but I can't find one anywhere. I may have to custom order it.
Add weighted core to the legs and feet. Although he can stand on his own without falling by leaning on his railguns, I'd like for him to be able to point his railguns back and spread his wings in MS mode when he is standing on his own. I also don't want him to lean backward when on a flying stand.
2mm round thruster on the front half of the feet.
a 2mm and a 1mm diameter metal tube added to the inside of the end of the railgun barrels.
1mm round metal rivets added to panel corners
LEDs. I want to add an LED to the eyes but that may prove to be more trouble than it's worth. We'll see. I am also considering adding blue LEDs to the thrusters on the back of the rail guns.
