Thanks Zerobxu. I'll be listing them this weekend.

If no one else is interested I'm going to have this post removed and put the kits up on Ebay on Monday 10/6/2008.

Thanks to everyone for looking and considering helping me out.

Hello all,

2 weekends ago on Sunday at 10:30 PM I discovered that my basement had flooded due to severe weather caused by Hurricane Ike. I don't actually live anywhere near Texas (Michigan), so this was quite a surprise. I have a finished basement and the carpet, pad, and Pergo flooring were ruined. Luckily none of the electronics, furniture, or items I stored in the basement were ruined, save for the few brown boxes I horde for when I need to ship something.

Shortly before my basement flooded I had applied for a Home Equity Loan with my local bank. Luckily the appraiser came before my basement flooded, but that didn't seem to matter because my appraisal came in $45,000.00 less than it had appraised for just under 2 years ago. Needless to say I didn't get my loan.

Now that you know the back story of why I am selling these kits, perhaps you can help me out. You might be thinking to yourself, "Boo hoo, Mr. finished basement needs money." Well, we don't have air conditioning (can't afford the installation or hike in utility bills because I work to support my wife (and our 4 pets) while she's in school full time) and we have to sleep in our basement in Michigan's humid Summer.

All of these kits are brand new, the price I'm asking is the price to ship it USPS Priority to your door as long as you live in the connected 48 United States. If you're outside the US I'm willing to work with you on shipping, but I don't want to come out of this basically sending you a free kit. Keep in mind, I need your help.

How did you end up assembling/painting the legs? I'm working on a Unit 01. I'm thinking I'll have to paint the knee joints black. Then assemble and prep the upper and lower legs. Then mask off the knee joints and paint the legs.

Is that what you did?

Thanks,
Donovan

Oh, by the way I love the color scheme, paint, and execution. Very awesome.

Wow. I thought the first picture in your post was a concept sketch/painting that you were basing your model off of. Very impressive work and photography!

Alright, it's done!

This is going to be brief, I'm about to leave for a week vacation in North Carolina in about 30 minutes. I was up last night getting pictures to post so that I made the deadline. I wanted to make my model hover off of the stand, but unfortunately last night I couldn't get my clear plastic rods to work and so in haste, my Kampfer is standing (for now - to make deadline).

I just wanted to say I learned a lot from this project and had a really fun time participating. Thanks to everyone for checking out my entry and I really enjoyed seeing everyone's work.

I don't have time to make thumbnails (sorry), so here are links to the photos:

clee-cm,

I'm not that advanced in my modeling skills, so to stand out, I knew I had to do something pretty dramatic.

GlauG,

I had to google image search Keroro Gunso because I've never heard of it. Pretty cute. :P

Like I said, part of the idea came from doing it like a racing bike. If this robot were to exist it would have a metal frame with very light weight shiny plastics to cover it. I'm glad that came across.

I didn't actually sculpt the base (this is the 2nd model I've ever even airbrushed - the first I've primed every part, and the first I've ever done a custom color scheme for). The base is made by a company called Plastruct. I don't have the part number anymore because I threw the bag away, but it came in a 2 pack just the size you see it. I think it was about $10 for them, I found them at my LHS looking for something to make a base out of (actually I was just looking for a stand).

Also, a lot of the newer anime w/ robots usually have pretty bright color schemes like this, which is what I was going for (trying to modernize old school Gundam - I prefer from Wing on through Destiny).

Well, I guess I got that something different reaction out of you then Foo. ;)

Here's some updated shots, got everything inked, now just need to coat with future, add my decals and then finish up the weapons.

The base is supposed to be a Mars scape but it's some kind of mineral rock (why it's metallic). The "Kampfer" is a recon robot exploring the area. When it is complete, it will be hovering over the surface. Just gotta figure out a good acronym for TAF that fits in with that theme now. :P

Anyway, pictures:

« on: May 22, 2007, 05:28:05 PM »
Here is the start of the work in progress thread for the Kampfer I am entering into the competition. I am calling it the TAF06 because I thought the inspiration I was using was a poster for the Tokyo Anime Fair, but apparently for something else. TAF06 still sounds good to me though.

Here's the inspiration:

Here's my coloring job:

And here are my photos from WIP:

The idea is to have really shiny plastics (the white and green) with dull/flat metals like a sport bike. The feel is something closer to Evangelion, Zegapain, or IGPX rather than a Gundam. Since I am just starting out and not very good with making mods, I wanted to do something that would still change the feel from what people associate with Gundam.

The photos were taken in my dark living room against white paper. My final entry photos will much better quality.

I have almost everything painted, the only thing left is to do all of the details, coat with Future and do my lines. I should be done in time for the deadline, but that extension would be nice.  ;)

I used Mr. Surfacer 500 with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner with 35:75 ratio (surfacer:thinner) and it worked really well. I originally tried 40:60 but it was having trouble coming out of my airbrush. I really like the finish and looks better than when I sprayed with the Tamiya cans.

Hope this helps anyone else looking to airbrush primer.

Back to the Kampfer grindstone...

(No-longer-lazy) Donovan

Can I use Mr. Surfacer 500 with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner or do I need some other kind of thinner for Mr. Surfacer? I'm over using cans of Tamiya and have 60% of my Kampfer parts left to prime before I can paint and finish up my entry. I guess I could always try it out, but I wanted to ask the pros before I go through testing on scrap. -- just to save on cleaning up my airbrush I guess.

Thanks,

« on: March 02, 2007, 03:43:36 PM »
I've got my color scheme down and posted on the wall for encouragement. I have also snapped the kit together to aid in the color scheme and try to think up mods. I've primed and painted most of the pieces. I'm currently working on finishing the weapons. My plan was to tease with the weapons and then start showing the progress on the kampfer.

Don't get too excited, I'm entering the light mod or OOB depending on what/if I get from the mechaskunk store and how I see thing shaping up as I'm putting on the finishing touches.

Hope to post some pics and WIP soon,
Donovan

Finishes, Decals, and Weathering / Mixing inks for panel lines
« on: January 18, 2007, 06:02:43 AM »
Sorry if this should have been posted in a sticky. I searched and didn't find anything.

I used to use Micron Pigma pens (005) to ink my kits, but after reading Foo's Master Grade tutorial, I got a koh-i-noor pen and 2 inks (black and blue) for Christmas. The idea of making my own colors was too appealing and those Micron's don't last long once they are gummed up.

How do I get a gray ink to do the panel lines? Do they make gray ink? (I couldn't find any at Michaels) Do you mix white and black? (I couldn't find any white at Michaels)

What about doing white panel lines? Would I have to use enamel/oil paint?

Any good stores to buy the koh-i-noor inks online? All I got/could find at Michaels was Winsor & Newton brand.

Thanks,
Donovan

Painting/Priming / Tamiya Surface Primer (L) - For Plastic & Metal (Gray)
« on: January 15, 2007, 12:21:36 PM »
I'm using a can Tamiya Surface Primer (L) - For Plastic & Metal (Gray) to prime my parts.

I did a few light coats on some parts, but I'm starting to wonder how you know when you have enough primer on the part -- I don't want to over do it.

I tried some priming before with the Tamiya and some surfaces came out nice and smooth and others were a little rough. The first 2 light coats seemed rough, but the 3rd which is drying now seems a little smoother. The 3rd coat also made the piece completely gray, the first 2 coats, the original color was showing through.

How many coats of the spray can Tamiya primer are necessary, and if I use Mr. Surfacer, how many coats does that normally take? How far away should I hold the can of Tamiya from the parts I'm spraying?

I can try to get decent pics if necessary.

Thanks,
Donovan

Model Help* (Check Stickies and Search First) / Re: Paint Questions
« on: January 10, 2007, 01:31:04 PM »
Is there any way to make fluorescent paint? I'm guessing probably not.

I need a fluorescent pink. Tamiya makes a decent fluorescent pink, but it's only for polycarb R/C bodies and only in a spray can.

I looked around at my LHS for some other acrylic that is fluorescent, but didn't find anything. I looked online and didn't find much either.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Donovan

P.S. - Sorry, thought this would go outside the paint sticky.

I'd like to get my name on the list. I was hoping to be able to start on it before I asked to be added, but I'm working on my McDonalds (kidding) Gundam RX-79(G) first for the experience. I just finished building a proper spray booth as well.

clee-cm:

After seeing philgoodwin's mockup for his HGUC Rick Dias in this post, I was definitely thinking of doing shades of orange:

http://fichtenfoo.com/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?p=17743#17743

I'm going to work on it tonight. I just don't want it to end up looking like FichtenFoo's first comment - a clown. I think I can pull it off.

I agree that the purple and grey are competitive, but my plan for painting is do the grey a metallic finish so it looks metal and the purple will look like a paint job.[/url]

Thank you all for your valuable feedback.

I definitely think it looks like Mc Donalds now after all your comments. Especially back when I was a kid, they had a lot more purple in their branding. The white was tinted slightly beige but that didn't come across. The red was not as strong on my lap top screen either.

So, here's my revision:

I got rid of the red and only went with orange. I used gray for the underlying frame. After starting to snap together the parts to get a feel for the kit I now see a few areas that the color didn't make sense. Now the purple is only decorative.

So, is this a step forward or back?

Thanks again,
Donovan

Hi all. With the exception of my listing of kits for trade in the FFF Swap Meet, this is my first post.

I got a Gundam RX-79(G) MG from the swap meet and I'm going to attempt my first original color design. For my inspiration, I'm using one of the suits from Mega Man ZX (Nintendo DS game). Here's a pic:

So, this is my starting point:

My girlfriend is a graphic design student, so I was asking her for advice and she really seemed to think there was too much red. Also that she didn't like them all one color and suggested 3-4 shades of red or another color.

I haven't done the back picture yet because I want to be sure about what I'm doing before I spend too much time on it. So, I'm looking for help and opinions on making this look better.

Here is the original source file if you want to mess around with it: http://www.donovanmyers.com/model/colored-front.psd

Thanks,
Donovan
