Project resurrection... I had a work in progress thread going back in 2011. I finally finished it!

Follow the link to a bunch of pictures...

At the bottom of that page is a link to the full WIP.

It's been a busy year for me and I've tended to try to spend my time building instead of posting on the internet so I put something up on my site and then think, next time I'm online I'll link it up on the forums but that hasn't really happened. It's been about a year since I put my Hasegawa Valkyrie aside and got sucked into several projects involving either our local Those Gundam Guys group/club/thing as well as some local Gundam-oriented businesses. The Valkyrie is finally back on the bench and I'm finally making time to post.

So, in order...

Here's my gallery gateway for my 1/6 of our Gundam Guys GM Assault Diorama:

http://funakatown.com/about/gm-assault-diorama-completed/

Here's another group project, repainting a 1/12 Unicorn Gundam statue created by Bandai, which made the rounds last year at the Anime conventions, but will be looking a LOT better this year:

http://funakatown.com/about/unicorn-gundam/

Next I built a 1/48 Mega Size Zaku for Robot4Less (http://robot4less.com/) which has their physical store less than a mile from my house (and is AWESOME... Gunpla heaven!  :D):

Finally, I just completed Airfix's little1/72 Spitfire Mk. IIa:

Bah no more holds people keep changing their minds...

I've picked up too many kits this year plus I've got a baby on the way and selling some kits will make space in 2 ways, the kits will be gone and I can use some of the money to help buy a flat-panel TV and get rid of my old clunky TV and the huge entertainment center it sits in.

Buyer pays shipping. Local pickup no problem (Fullerton, CA), otherwise I can ship USPS Parcel Post, Priority or UPS Ground, I'll add delivery confirmation as long as it's available with the method you choose.

All kits are NIB with parts on bagged sprues unless otherwise stated:

Model Gallery / ANA Gundam - Better Pictures
« on: June 30, 2011, 06:37:37 PM »
Long time no finish-a-model but I keep getting sucked into side projects (I'm still "officially" working on a Hasegawa Valkyrie since last year). I hope to wrap up a couple projects in the next few months that I've been working on and are anywhere from 50-80% complete. But onto the post...

So as part of the 30th Anniversay of Gundam, ANA (All Nippon Airways) painted up one of their 777s with a full-size Gundam and Bandai has created a special edition set of Gunpla. Unfortunately you have to fly ANA to get one. You order it from the sky mall catalogue.

But there I was last December, actually flying ANA from Hong Kong to Tokyo...

But I still couldn't get one because I don't live at a Japanese address!   :(

Well, that's OK because the kit has a pearl finish I'd have to strip and peel-and-stick stickers I'd have to, well, peel-and-stick.
So I grabbed a G30th HG Gundam kit (while I was at Shizuoka, you know, seeing the 1:1 Gundam   ;)) and made my own:

This was kind of a rush build to get it out by Anime Expo (literally started painting it last Saturday morning), so it was fun, but not perfect. I used Mr. Crystal Color pearl paint (Sapphire Blue and Diamond Silver) over regular blue and white paint. It just looks metallic in the pictures, and the white is more pearly than the blue, but I like the effect. I hope the Bandai guys at Anime Expo get a kick out of it. I'll take some better pictures after Anime Expo is over.

Capitalism Corner* / Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 **Unopened** $50
« on: May 07, 2011, 08:16:57 AM »
I got a new computer from Dell and while I was at it I got Photoshop Elements 9 from them. I knew from my laptop that my old PSE 4 doesnít work with Windows 7, so it was time for an upgrade.

When my PC arrives, what do you know, it comes with PSE8 installed AND a disk, so I could install it in my laptop. So, I put aside the PSE 9 box and got to work setting up my new PC and migrating everything over.

When I finally got back to PSE 9 to return it, it was past Dellís 21-day return period. Thatís a pretty damn short return period considering it took me 14 days just to get my PCÖ

Anyway, PSE is really good for working out color schemes like this:

See what else you can do with PSE 9 on amazon & bestbuy:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_1_20?url=search-alias%3Dsoftware&field-keywords=photoshop+elements+9&sprefix=photoshop+elements+9

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Adobe+Photoshop+Elements+9+-+Mac/Windows/1323111.p?id=1218250285735&skuId=1323111&st=photoshop%20elements&lp=2&cp=1

So if you want a legit copy of PSE and you donít want to pay $99.99 or amazonís/Best Buy's $69.99 sale price (about what I paid with the bundle deal I got with my PC) you can take my never-opened copy for  $50 plus shipping, which will be only $2.82 since I can use media mail. Obviously if youíre local you can pick it up.

Hereís the box. Look ma, unopened seals!

If I don't get any bites by tomorrow night it's goin' up on eBay.

Model In-Progress / VF-1D Super Valkyrie - Hasegawa 1/72
« on: November 25, 2010, 11:01:13 PM »
More than anything in the Gundam universe, I love Valkyries. I inherited a love for airplanes from my dad and I just always liked robots going back to the Shogun Warriors toys that were out when I was 4 or 5. So when this show called Robotech came along with an actual plot and these cool robots THAT TRANSFORMED INTO JETS!!! It was the coolest thing ever for the eleven year-old version of me.

I've collected a bunch of Valkyrie kits over the years and even built a few back in my brush-painting days but this is the first time I tackle on in my "real model builder" era. The Gundam kits always call to me, "I'm easier... build me next." This time I'm resisting the temptation.

For this project I'm combining Hasegawa's 1/72 scale VF-1D kit (I like the longer nose on the VF-1D in fighter mode), which comes with a photoetch parts set, with a Super VF-1A (just the Super parts and the folded backpack and bent legs that go with them, I'll still have a complete VF-1A fighter kit when I'm done), the weapons set (for the pilots and missiles) and the Option Decals Set 3 (http://www.hlj.com/product/HSG65766).

I'm going for the "7th Aircraft" of the Minmay Guard. Both the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels have a 6-plane aerobatic team, but they each have a 7th plane, a two-seater which serves as a backup plane as well as a promotional plane to take up VIPs and members of the media. I haven't worked out the exact color scheme yet, but it will be more or less blue and white to go with the decals.

Anyway, here's the progress...

Airplane models pretty much always start with the cockpit. I took one quick detour to deal with the landing gear doors (technically, the wheel well and cockpit tub are the same piece of plastic). I wanted the doors closed on this model. Like the Hasegawa Mustang I built last year, this plane is meant to be built wheels-down only and putting them up requires some surgery. At least these gear doors are in the neighborhood of the size of the hole they are supposed to cover. The Mustang gear doors were a joke.

I started by cutting the tabs off of the doors and gluing the two main doors together using a piece of plaplate to brace them into one solid piece. I then installed some plastic strip inside the wheel wells and them sanded them flush with the edges. These provide a lip for the gear doors to sit on when I glue them shut.

But, of course the gear doors are too thin, so I had to glue tiny thin strips along their edges to mate with the plastic lips I had added. Some careful sanding made for a pretty damn good seal. Once I finish the cockpit and really glue the nose halves together I'll perfect the fit of the doors.

Next came the actual cockpit (or the front office as many plane modelers call it). I had actually done a bit of work on this kit about 5 years ago before shelving it, so the instrument panels and a few other random pieces are glued on already. This shouldn't be a major problem to work around.

A few photo etch parts are meant to go in the cockpit, like these ones on the tops of the seats:

I assembled the two pilots, giving them different poses to make them not look like two identical pieces of plastic. The backseater gets to wave since the guy in front is doing the driving. I still have to work on his right arm. It's ridiculously skinny and his hand is kinda limp-wristed right now:

Here's a test-fit with the canopy, can't have anybody's head or hands keeping it from fitting later:

The cockpit on this thing is extremely simple, so once I get the pilots set and add a bit of mesh or something onto a bare and very visible piece of side wall, I'll paint it and close it up.

Model Gallery / Double Cherudim (or Cherudim 69!)
« on: November 21, 2010, 05:00:07 PM »
Well, I finished the Cherudim. Itís, um, colorful. I think I overdid the mods and camo and made kind kind of an eyesore. I think the camo on the standard Cherudim or the mods with the standard green color scheme would have worked, but I think all together itís too much. I like the guns, though.

Model In-Progress / Double Cherudim (or Cherudim 69!)
« on: September 18, 2010, 08:51:55 PM »
I posted a bit about this project in my GM Custom WIP, but I thought I'd post up the simple work I'm doing on my Cherudim. This is a stress-relief build (really) so I'm keeping it simple.

I bought two of these kits that Bluefin had on sale at Anime Expo for $20 each and I just went to town cramming as much crap onto one of them as possible. My upgrade gives the Cherudim 100% more guns, 100% more GN thrusters, over 50% more shield bits and infinity percent more beam sabers. And it doesn't have that ugly-ass shield bit "tail". Since it takes 2 kits (and 2 decal sheets) to make this version and it's easy to take the 6 on the shoulder decal and flip it, I'm going to call it the Cherudim 69.  :D

The biggest mod was cutting the side skirt armor mounts off one kit and putting it onto the back of the waist so that I could put both of the shield bit mounts on the back of the Cherudim.

Here's the snap of the kit. Most of the changes were done by trying to put things places and seeing what could go where with the least amount of work.

Since I won't deploy the nonsensical sniper-visor-over-the-eyes gimmick (especially on the legs!), I'm cutting notches out of them so I can glue, putty and paint them and them snap  them in afterwards.

I thought with all the armament it was lame that the Cherudim has no melee weapons (unless those small dull things under the pistols are supposed to be axe blades). MBizzle was nice enough to give me some spare Exia beam sabers from one of his projects so I modded two of the pistols with beam saber bayonets. That's three models with bayonets... It's starting to be a pattern.

Next I did a little mod so that I could slip the knees in and out after glue and paint. The first step is to shave down the pegs on the gray knee parts so they can get in from the top of the calves.

Then I had to cut some notches in the inside of the calves for the knee to slip into:

And there's the knee. On the side of the leg you can see the mount for the backpack thrusters I have mounted on the sides of the calves. The mounts are just the sides of the center of the backpack from the other kit.

Next I took the side handle off both guns just because I'm not a big fan of them in general and also you have to paint them and then move them and then paint the part that didn't get painted the first time. I filled the places they stick out of with some plastic rod and a backplate. I also cut the back off the sliding parts so that they gun parts could be painted separately and... yep you guessed it, put back together after putty and paint.

The bin on the left has the parts that are ready to prime and the bin on the left has the glued parts that need putty and sanding. I **almost** got that done this weekend.

I hope to prime this week, and be ready to paint next weekend. But I have a midterm this week and there's the wife and kid and all, so my predictions of progress always prove too optimistic. Maybe ready to paint by the end of next weekend?

Model In-Progress / MG GM Custom - Ruby Guard
« on: December 24, 2009, 05:23:54 PM »
I'm still spending a lot of time working on the house, but I actually found some time to work on this project I've been tinkering with as a side project for over a year. It's now getting my main focus. I'm going for a light to medium amount of mods to try to modernize the kit, but not change its overall appearance.

Here's the concept art with the decals I've designed:

Progress started with covering up the awful exposed polycap in the knee:

Then I went to work cutting off the ugly non-functional dummy pistons from the front ankle (paste the link to see it on Dalong: http://dalong.net/review/mg/m24/p/m24_n09.jpg) and hollowing out the lower legs to fit a poycap:

Then I will use the pistons from my old MG Mk. II ver. 1.0:

You can also see where I'm going with ver. Ka style feet. There's a lot of clean-up to do, but the hard work is done. I'm also lengthening the thighs to make the legs a bit longer. The thighs are ridiculously short on this kit.

The other things I plan to do are change the elbow joints and probably add some torso mobility mods. After that I'll put it together and look at doing some aesthetic mods and detailing.

Model Gallery / 00 HG 1/144 Enact
« on: October 14, 2009, 05:41:22 PM »
Well, with the purchase of a house and moving looming (escrow should close this week), I didn't want to start any big projects. So I did something I haven't really done since my first model. Just do a simple build.

Other than the color scheme and some simple decals, the only thing I did that wasn't OOB was fill in the hollow parts in the shield and feet, mod the elbow and knee joints so I could assemble them after painting and add panel lines to the head fins to allow for the white trim.

Model Gallery / (cough cough) 31 Days! (cough) Mustang vs. Citroen
« on: August 28, 2009, 04:38:17 PM »
Okay, so maybe it took more like 180 days... Meeting deadlines was never my strong point.  ???

Here's the WIP:
http://fichtenfoo.net/forum/index.php?topic=4742.0

I still haven't put the whole dio together, but all the models are complete and I wanted to phototgraph them individually before I put them all together permanently. By the end of the weekend I should post the final dio pics.

I'll start with the Citroen, just because it's my favorite. This is a fantastic little kit from Tamiya and the version I got came with the German figures in this build (as well as 5 others).

Doors were cut out to place in the open position. Figure both received "surgery" to repose their limbs.

It's a great kit, but it is kinda small...

Onto the Mustang. It's supposed to be the centerpiece of the dio, but I like the car better, as you can see from the number of pictures I took.

Edit: New, better Mustang pictures.

The Mustang had a lot of work done to put it in closed-for-flight-mode. There's a lot of putty around the landing gear doors and canopy. The canopy fit so poorly that I had to use CA glue to hold it in place and sure enough it fogged up despite my best efforts. I also cut off all the flight control surfaces and deflected them all to show their proper position for a knife-edge pass.

Wow, I have WAY too many kits, especially for a guy who only finishes about 3-4 kits per year. So, as much as it pains me to do so, here goes... Kits are generally half their yen price unless they come with something extra, or I'm a bit more attached to them.

All items are Mint In Box unless otherwise noted. Buyer pays actual USPS shipping from 92805. You pick which shipping type you want, Parcel or Priority. PM me if you want a weight estimate.

PM me to make purchases. First PM on an item gets it.

A careful inventory of the kit showed that one small chest thruster was missing, but that's OK because this kit comes with a full-size spare:

I bought the second GP01FB from a friend so I could have a second core fighter to make hangar diorama similar to the other one I had done with the GP01:

Model In-Progress / Mustang vs. Citroen (31 Days Refugee)
« on: March 29, 2009, 04:57:46 PM »
Well, having well exceeded the 31-day time limit, I thought I should move my WIP here.

If you didn't see the old one, it's here:

http://fichtenfoo.net/forum/index.php?topic=4635.0

Here's where I'm at:

Sand, reprime, sand, reprime, paint gloss black (finally):

Spot more surface flaws, sand a bit, put a little Mr. Surfacer 500 onÖ

More sandingÖ

Final coat of blackÖ

And finally!!! Aluminum!

I can still see a few surface flaws here and there, but itís just time to move onÖ

Itís surprisingly hard to paint the aluminum and feel like youíre getting a solid coat on the model, especially while wearing a black glove. Itís hard to tell when the dark spots you see are reflections of the glove where the paint is good or just the black undercoat showing through where there isnít enough paint. I guess I should get another color gloveÖ

Iím looking forward to hitting some panels in different shades of Alclad and making the model look more realistic. Then I have to paint the tail and nose red, the trim tabs white, the olive green anti-glare panel and the yellow wing stripes and prop tips. Then itís on to decals, woohoo!

Iíll probably just finish off the Mustang, then do the car and Germans, and then do the dio, but weíll see. I may start sneaking ahead between clearcaots on the Mustang. The Citroen is going to be REALLY easy to paint and finish. Good olí Tamiya.
