Model In-Progress / Re: Eve scratch build from Wall-E

Hi,

First, it looks fantastic!

I was wondering whether you explored the possibility of adding at least another pair of eyes to the Eve model.  Two different sets of LEDs for different eye expressions, partitioned within the head so that the LEDs will light up only their eyes and not the other ones.  It's just a thought that came to me while I was looking at the smiley eyes.

Anyway keep it up! :)

I know the Astraea is a tad beyond the scope of this duel, but any chance my Astraea can get in?  It's basically a prototype of the Exia and they share many similar features.

Model Gallery / MG Strike Noir (VP Conversion) + I.W.S.P.
« on: August 25, 2008, 04:55:51 PM »
Hi all,

Here's my newest work, the MG Strike Noir (VP Conversion) + I.W.S.P.  (don't ask me what IWSP stands for, I've no idea  :D )

The colorway is pretty much straight from VP website.  Like the VP kit I used two tones of light grey, but it doesn't show well in the photo.  I used similar feeling for the IWSP backpack, the shield, and the rifle.  The decals are mostly from VP waterslides, with some additions from Bandai's official Strike Noir waterslides, and I also used a few white warning decals (on the rifle, knee etc.) from mechaskunk.

On hindsight I am satisfied with my work, but I wonder if I could've used a non-Strike Noir colorway.  I really thought about it for several weeks prior to starting this work, but I couldn't think of any that satisfied me.  I honestly believe that black and light grey go perfectly with the head and faceplate.  But its a shame, as I enjoy custom colorways, but oh well the final work looks nice on my desktop :)

Anyway, that's the end of my rant.  Enjoy the work :)

Model Gallery / HGUC 1/144 Hazel series
« on: July 29, 2008, 03:45:54 PM »
Hi all,

These are the 3 HGUC 1/144 Hazel mechs I worked on in conjunction with the Spartan.  These are, in order a. Hazel early-type Full Armor color b. Hazel Custom c. Hazel Owsla.  The only serious mod I did were extending the lower legs of the Hazel Custom and Hazel Owsla, since the stock legs make the kits look squat.  I also added some styrene parts to the legs as well.  For decals, I used the Bandai AOZ series and Xyberdecal #4 which is absolutely fantastic.

Additional notes for each mech:
a. Hazel early-type Full Armor coloor: I actually did this kit as a test bed for the FullArmor colors, which I plan to use on another project in the future.  I think the colors need less difference in hue, but this kit didn't turn out too bad imho.  I'm pretty satisfied since I only bought the early-type for it's backpack which I wanted for the Owsla.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r12/beertax/IMG_0990.jpg

b. Hazel Custom: This is the stock Hazel Custom with Advanced Hazel's backpack and shields, and the early-type's rifle.  I expected a lot of trouble with this kis but I never realized that I would have to do so much masking.  I am pretty satisfied with the color scheme; I used the same colors from my GP02 b/c I love the blue so much.  I especially love the white text decals from Xyberdecal, which were prefect for this project.  I might do another Hazel in the future, but only if Bandai makes the MG version :)

c. Hazel Owsla: Please note that this kit is not finished.  It actually is, in the technical sense, but now I plan to make some changes - esp. with the decals, which I think are too much.  Plus I need to take photos with a background that does not clash with the white color of the mech.  Hopfully MarkW can help me with the additional decals I plan to add to the Owsla.  Anyway here are just a couple pics of the Owsla in its current state.

Model Gallery / MG RGM Spartan Desert-type
« on: July 29, 2008, 03:40:36 PM »
Hi all,

This is the RGM-Spartan conversion kit from akohobby, painted in custom desert color scheme.  I actually wanted to make a more detailed camo but I don't yet have the skills for it so the results speak for themselves.  I also tried an oil weathering around the edges but they came out very faint.  Lessons for the future, I guess.

Anyway here are the list of all the mods:
1. Akohobby conversion kit to the stock MG RGM Space Type.
2. Modded the knee with parts from Tamiya 1/35 M41 Walker Bulldog tank
3. Added reactive armor parts on chest, shin guard, and shoulder armor
4. Added rifle from MG Gelgoog (Anavel Gato version)
5. Added shield from MG RX-79G Gundam ground type
6. Added the bazooka and plug knife from HG Evangelion Test Type
7. modded left hip armor to include 1 more grenade rack.
8. Added bazooka rack and knife sheathe on torso.
9. Added Xyberdecal custom decals from Akohobby on chest and left shoulder.

This finalized version is not what I originally had in my mind, but I am not unhappy with the results.  I consider this a learning exercise and I hope to do better camo work in the future.

Here are the pics:

well I learned it the hard way than.  Now I just hope the PP degreased the resin and the primer will stick...

ps: does any1 know how dangerous/ toxic Purple Power is?  Is there something I should watch out for?

Is this the same Purple Power?  Here is an MSDS...
http://www.unitedlabsinc.com/usa/content/pdf/msds/550msds.pdf

It was always my understanding that it was for cleaning resin only.  I have zero experience with resin, but is there a reason why you cleaned it after you puttied rather than before?

well I always scrub the resin after I dip them in the cleaning solution, and its easier to scrub once all the resin stubs are removed from the resin parts.  I had tested Purple Power with some small resin parts and I was relieved that it didn't eat thru the resin, like acetone does.  It just never occurred to me that a cleaning solution would eat thru putty.

15
Hi all,

Just a warning about Purple Power.  I got the industrial strength Purpoe Power bottle a couple days ago and poured some into a container filled with resin parts I cleaned, puttied, and sanded.  Approx. 24 hours later I drained the Purple Power and began scrubbing the resin parts.  I than discovered, much to my dismay, that all the putty that I put on the resin had been cleaned off!  Hours of work stripped away... I am pretty pissed!

I have yet to prime the parts so I don't even know if the resin parts are properly cleaned.  But I just want to warn every1 that Purple Power will eat into putty, specifically, Tamiya Putty basic type.

ps: does any1 know how dangerous/ toxic Purple Power is?  Is there something I should watch out for?

My main beef on your kit is the drybrushing. It's rough and out of scale, but I'm sure the flash amplifies the effect.

ditto.  The paint chips are huge and looks more like painting mistakes.

The major issue I have with kits of these sizes is the attention to detail.  For example, and I don't want to steal your thunder, but here is a similar kit I did a while back.  As you can see I separated the colors on the feet, the chest, and the shoulder verniers even though each is a single piece.  By painting different sections of the piece in different colors (thru masking off each section) I created more detail for the overall kit.  I noticed that you did this for the head where you colored in the tubes on the side of the "snout" grey, and I think your work would definitely have benefitted from more such separation.

Finally and this is a matter of personal taste but I think a more subdued hues of red and yellow would have benefitted your work.  And maybe a couple general decals (like Zeon insignia on the shoulder or unit number) would have helped as well.

My point is that the more work you put in to your kit the better it will generally turn out in the end.  Of course some modellers make their works way too busy, but I think your gelgoog could  have used a few more details.  Hope my many critiques helped you out!  I do like the idea of a J Ridden Gelgoog, since so far I've done pretty much every other Gelgoog but his (I did the HGUC Gelgoog Command in the pic, a HGUC Gelgoog J for Char, a MG Gelgoog for Anavel Gato, and a MG Gelgoog AND a HGUC Gelgoog J for Shin Matsunaga so far), so maybe I will attempt one in the future as well :)

I would like to see different poses... that pose doesn't feel quite right.  Also, I dig the MKII shield I wish you'd put it on so he can hide behind it and flash the sword.

Overall, clean and efficient work.  But honstly I can't claim I like it, I think the MKII ver 2.0 deserves some weathering as it really brings out the MKII's manhy details.

Hi all,

Thought I would share with you my very first completed work, the MG Zeta Plus A1 haman Khan custom.  I finished this kit about one year ago, and it was my very first completed kit (the first "try" was a RX-78-5 Gundam in Zeon green colors, but I never finished it).  As you can see, the Z-Plus has a lot of issues like seam lines on the head and very poor, fat, panel lines, esp. on the wings.  But I decided to leave everything as is and not fix - like I do other kits - for remembrance sakes.  I still enjoy looking at it, but as my desktop is cluttered I now keep it in my closet.  :(

Anyway, here is the backstory for this kit:
During the height of the Gryps War (Zeta Gundam era), Anaheim Electronics, the trans-international conglomerate that designs and manufactures mobile suits for such upstart factions as the AEUG, became nervous about the rising power of the Neo Zeon and decided to make an overture for an "understanding" between their two organizations.  As a sign of good will during the ensueing negotiations, Anaheim re-painted and offered one of their top secret mobile suits to the charismatic leader of the Neo Zeon movement, Haman Khan.  In the end, the "understanding" - a secret treaty for protection for the conglomerate should the Neo Zeon achieve dominance over both the Titans/ EFSF and AEUG - never got beyond talking points.  However, Haman was greatly pleased by Anaheim's gift, as it offered her important insights to the strengths and weaknesses of one of her greatest enemies.  This gift was none other than one of the first MSZ-006A1 Zeta Plus units, the mass-produced version of the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, the greatest mobile suit of the AEUG, and Haman's eventual mortal enemy.

The decals are from Samuel's Quebeley series, which I thought appropriate.

Enough words, here are the pics, enjoy!:

Real kit is actually a touch less blue than pics, but they are close enough.  Remember, this is my first kit, so please keep the criticisms to a minimum! :)
