How is that F91 a diorama?  Isn't that just the base that comes with the kit?

Regardless.  Nice works and congratulations to the winners.

As defined, the base had detail beyond being just a support base - hence, it's a diorama. IPMS Philippines defined that...

Diorama definitions are always a gray area.  Some say a story needs to be inferred, others say more than one "main" subject needs to be present, etc etc.

My local IPMS usually ignore the elaborate bases, and only judge a dio is there is a story and multiple subjects interacting with each other.

Its hard for contests to set down rules for a dio when folks who enter dios have a completely different interpretation of what a dio is....  Reminds me of the e2046 summer comp... someone took pictures of their display case with a bunch of like themed kits standing around on a shelf in their display case as a single dio entry....

Are there pictures of the rest of the IPMS contest?  And I'm curious as to how the Sci/fi category compares with other modeling categories like armor, aircraft, cars, etc.  Curious as to if the popularity and numbers are similar to how it is at the various local IPMS comps I've been to.

That's true, diorama ruling is always a fuzzy thing. As for the Sci-Fi division...only about twenty kits were entered, and due to some rules, were either in the figures division, or in the normal divisions (case in point, sci-fi kits with an actual full-scale version, like the Blue Thunder helicopter). IPMS Philippines is still figuring this out, I guess. Overall, the whole competition had I guess...about 100-150 kits.

I belong to my local IPMS chapter and have judged at our last few shows so here's our take on dios... if it's on a scenery base and has multiple subjects telling a story (example: one tank with figs on snow) and entered intp the "diorama" category specifically, then it's a dio. If it's a Tank on a terrain/etc. base (with or without figs) and entered into just the armor category then we just judge the model itself and not the base or figs.
